The Books

BRAVE?

Brave? Is the story of two young people, Tricia and Brett, pulling together to sail a small wooden yacht from New Zealand to the Pacific Islands and beyond. It goes back to the 80s when cruising carried more unknowns and risks than it does today. Weather forecasting and navigational aids were just two of the technologies which were elementary.

Telecommunications, tracking systems, desalination plants, solar power generation and many other mod-cons make cruising so much more comfortable today.

Shaula, at eight metres, is a small yacht by anyone’s measure. The story takes you to places seldom visited. As a young couple they showed the value of getting on in tough situations and during long isolations. Love, loyalty, concern for the environment and a sense of adventure gave them all the key ingredients to survive and thrive. It is the human element that flows through the pages that gives courage for future ideas and hopes. For the author, when a situation in later life seemed hard, she would simply remind herself, ”If we can sail as we did, then anything is possible.”

NEW! “FOOLISH?” is now published!

Foolish? takes up the story around the coast of South Africa and on to South America. Here, Shaula made the arduous journey through the Magellan Strait and the Patagonian canals to Golfo de Penas, literally “the gulf of distress”.

There is a third book to come that completes the story.
